UWC EXECUTIVE MEETS IN SEMIANNUAL SESSION

     The UWC Executive held its semiannual meeting in Toronto on Saturday, October 21, 2006. In addition to hearing and debating reports by Executive Committee members as well as Councils and Commissions, the following action was taken:
  • to deposit most checking account funds into money market;
    • to allocate 8,000 $CAN  each to: the World Educational Coordinating Council and
    • the Human and Civil Rights’ Commission and
  • 7,000 $CAN to the World Social Services Council to be used by them as they deem appropriate in calendar year 2007;
  • to give 2,000 $CAN to the World Sports Commission to defray certain 2006 expenses involving an international  skiing tournament and to allocate for calendar 2007 the sum of 8,000$CAN for a volleyball or soccer tournament in Europe involving Ukrainian Diaspora teams;
  •  to allocate 3,000 $CAN to the World Scholarly Council for calendar 2007 for the publication of a scholarly compendium on the Ukrainian Diaspora and a history of the UWC World Scholarly Council with an additional 5,000 $CAN available in 2007 for specific projects dealing with Ukrainian studies’ programs in the Diaspora, the Great Famine, Akcija “Wisla” and OUN-UPA;
  • to afford an additional two weeks to the Council on Cultural Affairs and the Council on Aid to Ukraine’s Citizens Abroad to submit projects for financing in 2007;
  • to observe the 75th Anniversary of the Great Famine from November 2006 to November 2007;
  • to constitute the  UWC’s 75th Anniversary Great Famine Committee by adding to Chair Stefan Romaniw, Askold S. Lozynskyj, Michael Sawkiw, Morgan Williams, Jurij Klufas, Bohdan Fedorak, Victor Pedenko, Eugene Czolij, Roman Serbyn, Oleh Romanyshyn, Nadia Luciw, Iroida Wynnyckyj and Orysia Sushko and request the Chair to complete the list with other names submitted in his proposal upon consent; to intensify the  “Great Famine was Genocide of Ukrainians” parliamentary resolutions’ effort culminating in a United Nations’ resolution through the government of Ukraine in the Fall  of 2007; 
  •  to design a uniform poster for worldwide use;
  • to develop a database of existing exhibits and school curricula and an estimate of duplication costs; 
  • to research the viability of commencing class action law suits on behalf of Great Famine victims against the Russian Federation as the successor in interest of the USSR and western corporations that were unjustly enriched as a result of the Great Famine; 
  • to arrange through the Association of Ukrainians in Poland and the Ukrainian Catholic Church  for a prayer-service for the victims of Akcija “Wisla” to be held on the grounds of the Polish “Sejm” on April 28, 2007 and to hold similar services throughout the world concurrently at similarly appropriate venues;
  • to celebrate forty years of the Ukrainian World Congress at a banquet-fundraiser held in Toronto on March 3, 2007;
  • to convene the 2007 Executive meetings on March 3, 2007 and October 20, 2007 and the Board of Directors in Donetsk on August 20-21, 2007. 

UWC PRESIDENT MEETS WITH TORONTO AND MONTREAL COMMUNITIES

     On Saturday and Sunday, October 21-22, 2007, the UWC President met with the Ukrainian communities in Toronto and Montreal respectively. In Toronto the President spoke on several topics ranging from the IV World Forum of Ukrainians, the current political situation in Ukraine and the UWC’s immediate plans. In Montreal the President spoke on the occasion of Sviato Pokrovy – the traditional date accorded to the formation of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. 

UWC FIRST VP ATTENDS WORLD SUM CONGRESS                                                        

     On October 27-29, 2006, the XVII World Congress of the Ukrainian Youth Association was held in Toronto. Sixty-five (65) delegates from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Ukraine and the United States of America attended the Congress. The delegates reviewed the work done over the last 5-year term of the SUM World Executive, including a very successful World Jamboree in Ukraine in August 2006 attended by 179 participants from 7 countries. The Congress elected a new SUM World Executive headed by Myroslava Pidhirnyj. The Congress also adopted a resolution to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Famine of 1932-1933, as a genocide against the Ukrainian people. UWC's 1st Vice President Eugene Czolij gave greetings on behalf of the Ukrainian World Congress during the banquet to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Ukrainian Youth Association in the diaspora.

UWC GENERAL SECRETARY ATTENDS FIRST PLENARY POST FORUM UWCC MEETING IN KYIV

     The Ukrainian World Coordinating Council (UWCC) held its first plenary post-Forum session on Monday, October 30, 2006 in Kyiv. The meeting was attended by twenty-two members of the Presidium and some thirty guests. The following action was taken:
  • Mykhaylo Ratushny, Victor Pedenko/Eugene Czolij (split term) and Wasyl Duma were elected vice-presidents from Ukraine, the Western and Eastern Diasporas respectively;
  • the By-Laws were amended to increase the number of Presidium members to forty with one additional member from Ukraine (Mykola Zulynskyj), the Baltic States and Russia/Kazakhstan; 
  • UWCC activity over the next two years shall be focused on an intensive effort commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Great Famine and the protection of the Ukrainian language in Ukraine.
