ПРЕЗИДЕНТ СВІТОВОГО КОНҐРЕСУ УКРАЇНЦІВ
УЗЯВ УЧАСТЬ У ЗАХОДАХ
КОНҐРЕСУ УКРАЇНЦІВ КАНАДИ
6 грудня 2008 р. президент Світового Конґресу
Українців (СКУ) Евген Чолій узяв участь у роботі практичного семінару
Конґресу Українців Канади на тему громадського розвитку та у святковому
бенкеті, що пройшли в Едмонтоні, Канада.
Під час бенкету, присвяченого відзначенню
Шевченківською медаллю канадських провідників, президент СКУ Евген
Чолій сказав:

Honourable Minister Jason Kenney! Honourable Senator Raynell Andreychuk! Member of Parliament Borys Wrzesnewskyj! Member of Parliament Brent Rathgeber! Шановний президенте Конґресу Українців Канади Павле Грод! Пані і панове! Від імені Світового Конґресу Українців маю
велику честь і приємність привітати Конґрес Українців Канади та
дати Вам признання за Вашу успішну працю та великі досягнення.
As the newly elected president of the
Ukrainian World Congress, I wish to thank publicly the Ukrainian
Canadian Congress and, more particularly UCC’s president Paul Grod and
UCC’s 1st vice president Lesia Chyczij, for your faith in me, your
constant encouragement and your strong support which gave me much
strength and energy during the 9th Ukrainian World Congress this August
in Kyiv.
I also wish to thank UCC’s president Paul Grod
for his wise advice, help and active participation in the first
delegation of the Ukrainian World Congress in its key meetings with the
President, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of
Ukraine during this November’s 75th commemoration of the Holodomor in
Kyiv which laid the foundation to what I trust will be a real change
and a much more effective and constructive relationship between the
Ukrainian World Congress, our communities worldwide and Ukraine.
Today, I have the pleasure to congratulate the
Ukrainian Canadian Congress for a very exciting weekend in Edmonton,
including a Community Development Workshop, tonight's National Leaders
Gala, and tomorrow's UCC Board meeting. The Community Development
Workshop entitled "Create the Vision" provided very interesting ideas
to improve the work of our organizations and to better serve our
community.
It is also my
pleasure to congratulate the 2008 Shevchenko medal recipients, namely:
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the
Ukrainian Famine-Genocide, one of the worst tragedies in the history of
mankind.
In his work The Divine Comedy, the renowned
Italian poet Dante gave the following chilling description of hell:
In a cruel historical paradox, Stalin's regime
chose food as its weapon of mass destruction to crush Ukraine’s
independence movement and starve to death up to ten million Ukrainians,
including three million children.
Despite the sheer magnitude of this
destruction of human life, incredibly, for the better part of the 20th
century, the Ukrainian genocide of 1932-33 could also have been called
the unknown genocide.
Indeed, Soviet authorities, with many Western
accomplices, were able to effectively conceal this genocide. As matter
of fact, present-day Russia still denies it.
On May 27th of this year, the Parliament of
Canada passed Bill C-459, which stipulates that:
What a stark difference from Russia where,
upon the arrival of the International Remembrance Flame for the victims
of the Holodomor, which was organized by the Ukrainian World Congress
in conjunction with the Government of Ukraine and which travelled
through 29 countries (including Canada) since April of this year,
Russia’s Foreign Ministry denied the right of the Ukrainian community
to freely honour the victims of this genocide and scare tactics were
used to prevent such commemorations from being held.
This evening, on behalf of the Ukrainian World
Congress, I wish to express our sincere gratitude to the Government of
Canada for recognizing the Ukrainian Holodomor with Bill C-459.
I also wish to acknowledge and thank Minister
Jason Kenney for having traveled to Ukraine last month and addressing a
special forum honoring the victims on the 75th anniversary of the
Holodomor in Kyiv.
Я складаю подяку Конґресу Українців Канади за
те, що він дійсно був голосом мільйонів жертв Голодомору та за успішне
завершення довголітних старань, щоб реалізувати визнання правди про
Голодомор урядом Канади.
Last August, the world has witnessed with
astonishment that Russia's imperialist ambitions have still not been
satiated and that it still resorts to the brutal use of force to pacify
its neighbours with total disdain for international borders.
This is why I wish to take this opportunity,
on behalf of the Ukrainian World Congress, to commend the Government of
Canada for having backed Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO in the
spring of this year.
On April 2, 2008, the Prime Minister of
Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, stated in Bucharest that:
Clearly, this demonstrates that the Government
of Canada is conscious of the fact that a free and independent Ukraine
is the best guarantee for peace and stability in Europe.
I trust that our government will continue to support Ukraine's efforts to join NATO and the European Union, which is in the best interests of Canadians and Ukrainians. Очевидно, що таке позитивне ставлення канадського уряду до України треба до великої міри завдячувати довголітній, постійній та впливовій праці Конґресу Українців Канади та української громади в Канаді, за що Вам належить велике признання і подяка. Події на Кавказі показали, що Російська
Федерація є ще й далі загрозою цілісності української території.
На жаль, український народ ще не достатньо сконсолідований, щоб самостійно протистояти такій постійній загрозі, а внутрішні політичні конфлікти в Україні цьому, очевидно, не допомагають. Тому Конґрес Українців Канади та українська громада в Канаді повинні і далі пропагувати ідею, що єдиною запорукою, щоб Росія знову не стала імперією і ще більшою загрозою для всього демократичного світу, є вільна і незалежна Україна. Для цього світове українство мусить активно підтримувати старання України вступити в членство Євросоюзу і НАТО. Дуже важливим питанням є також налагодження
тісної співпраці з Україною, до чого Світовий Конґрес Українців
докладає великих зусиль.
У рамках відзначення 75-их роковин Голодомору наша делегація мала успішні зустрічі з Президентом України Віктором Ющенком, Прем’єр-міністром Юлією Тимошенко та міністром закордонних справ Володимиром Огризком. Сподіваємось, що наша майбутня співпраця з Україною у різних напрямках діяльності буде проходити на вищому рівні та на основі справді партнерських відносин задля результативного вирішення спільних завдань. На кінець дякую Конґресу Українців Канади за співпрацю і підтримку діяльності Світового Конґресу Українців і бажаю Вам наснаги, запалу та бажання й далі плідно працювати на добро української громади в Канаді та українського народу в Україні. І в тому щасти Вам Боже”.
