BORYS WRZESNEWSKYJ

As the appointed Director of the World Congress of Ukrainians representing the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, Borys strengthens the connection between the global Ukrainian community and Ukrainians in Canada.

He works closely with the leadership of the WCU, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, and member organizations to advance advocacy in democratic countries, expand support for Ukraine, and consolidate Ukrainian communities worldwide. His priority is mobilizing political, social, and financial resources to support Ukraine’s victory, reconstruction, and the protection of Ukrainian rights globally.

His key responsibilities include:

  • strengthening the representation of Ukraine and Ukrainian Canadians in international institutions and before democratic governments
  • supporting joint strategic initiatives of the WCU and the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in advocacy, humanitarian aid, and community development
  • enhancing coordination between Ukrainian organizations in Canada and the global WCU network
  • engaging partners and donors in programs that strengthen democratic institutions, civil society, and education in Ukraine
  • developing long-term solidarity projects and supporting Ukrainian communities worldwide

Borys has extensive experience in political leadership, entrepreneurship, and community service. He was elected four times to the House of Commons of Canada representing Etobicoke Centre (2004, 2006, 2008, 2015).

In Parliament, he served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration and its Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure (2016–2017), and as Vice-Chair and member of several committees, including Public Safety, Public Accounts, and Transport. He also chaired the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association and actively contributed to interparliamentary groups.

Before entering Parliament, Borys was deeply engaged in international advocacy campaigns supporting Ukraine’s independence, democratic reforms, and educational and youth initiatives. He collaborated with the Ukrainian diaspora, Western political actors, the Helsinki Committee, and the People’s Movement of Ukraine.

During the Orange Revolution, he played a key role in organizing an international election observation mission that helped ensure transparency and protect democratic processes. He also contributed significantly to the recognition of the Holodomor as genocide in Canada.

Borys has received numerous national and international awards, including the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (IV and V degrees), the St. Volodymyr the Great Medal from the World Congress of Ukrainians, the Shevchenko Medal from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, the Gold Honor Award of the Canadian-Polish Congress, the Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland, and the Estonian-Canadian Medal of Merit.

His leadership is deeply rooted in the Ukrainian community. Born into a family of Ukrainian immigrants, he has been actively engaged in community life from a young age. He is a third-generation entrepreneur and owner of Future Bakery and M-C Dairy.

As a business leader, he combines entrepreneurship with philanthropy, supporting humanitarian and educational initiatives in Canada and Ukraine through his family foundation, and contributing to Ukraine’s defense.

Borys lives in Toronto, where he continues to balance public service, business, and philanthropy while upholding the values of Ukrainian identity, responsibility, and service.
