Australian states pass resolutions supporting Ukraine ahead of Independence Day

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations (AFUO) welcomed recent resolutions passed by the legislative councils of New South Wales and Victoria in support of Ukraine ahead of the country’s post-Soviet 34th Independence Day.

The resolutions recognize Ukraine’s struggle for freedom and affirm Australia’s commitment to the sovereignty of the Ukrainian state and its people.

In New South Wales, the resolution was introduced on Aug. 6 by lawmaker Mark Buttigieg, who emphasized Ukraine’s long history of resistance to Russian oppression — from the Holodomor and World War II to its independence in 1991.

“A stark reminder of the immense price Ukraine has paid for its sovereignty… defending not only its borders but democratic values we all hold dear,” Buttigieg said.

The AFUO said that the state government has also provided $500,000 in humanitarian aid for Ukrainian displaced persons, funded community events, offered free access to public facilities, and supported visa assistance programs.

The resolution in Victoria was introduced by parliamentarian Michael Galea on Aug. 12.

Ukraine’s independence matters not just to that country but to the entire international rules-based order,” he said.

Representatives from both states expressed unwavering solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora in Australia, wishing the country a long life, sovereignty, prosperity, and enduring independence.

Two states. One message: Australia stands with Ukraine,” the AFUO said.
