Chicago mayor honors UCCA Illinois for community impact

CHICAGO – The Illinois division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) received an official letter of special recognition from Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson for its outstanding advocacy and community service.

This prestigious acknowledgement highlights UCCA’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Ukrainian-American community, promoting cultural heritage, and advancing humanitarian and democratic values,” the UCCA Illinois said.

As a city that hosts one of the largest Ukrainian communities in North America – including the welcoming of an estimated 30,000 refugees since Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine – Chicago expressed its gratitude for UCCA’s vital role in strengthening unity, resilience, and civic engagement during times of significant challenges and global instability.

Johnson described UCCA’s impact on Chicago’s Ukrainian community as “incredible.”

Here in Chicago and across Illinois, you have mobilized Ukrainians and Ukrainian Americans with remarkable unity and purpose. You have brought together diverse communities to advocate for peace and solidarity, demonstrating the power of collective action in the face of global conflict,” the mayor said.

UCCA’s efforts have also deepened the relationship between the Ukrainian government and Chicago – also a sister city of Kyiv – in building bridges of diplomacy, friendship, and mutual respect that will benefit both communities in the future.

Once again, I want to thank you for your invaluable support, vision, and leadership. We look forward to continuing this journey together, making a lasting difference in the lives of those seeking refuge, safety, and a brighter future in Chicago, as well as advocating for peace and security in Ukraine,” Johnson said.
