Florida’s Boca Raton recognizes Nov. 22 as Holodomor Memorial Day

The Floridian city of Boca Raton has officially proclaimed Nov. 22 as Holodomor Memorial Day to honor the millions of Ukrainians who died during the man-made famine of 1932–1933, according to the local Ukrainian community.

The announcement came after Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer signed the corresponding proclamation.

“A day to remember the millions of Ukrainians who perished during the man-made famine of 1932–1933, imposed by Stalin’s Soviet regime,” the community wrote.

Recognition of this day in the United States holds great significance for Ukrainians worldwide, serving as a reminder that truth matters, that the suffering of millions must never be forgotten, and that remembrance is the first step toward preventing such tragedies from ever happening again.

Thank you to the City of Boca Raton for standing with the Ukrainian community and honoring the memory of those innocent lives lost to tyranny,” the community said.

Every November, Ukraine and the global Ukrainian community commemorate the victims of the Holodomor — a genocide of the Ukrainian people through a man-made famine imposed by the Soviet communist regime in 1932–1933. This year, Holodomor Memorial Day falls on Saturday, Nov. 22.

In 2023, North Carolina became the latest U.S. state to recognize the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Previously, the genocide was officially recognized in Washington, Maryland, Arizona, and Wyoming, with a total of 35 U.S. states now acknowledging it. Globally, about 30 countries, as well as the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, have recognized the 1932–1933 famine as a genocide.

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) expressed gratitude to the global Ukrainian community for its persistent advocacy and efforts to achieve recognition of the Holodomor as genocide.

The UWC invites everyone to join the ongoing campaign to honor and remember the victims.
