Join the global prayer for Ukraine on Independence Day

The Ukrainian Council of Churches and Religious Organizations has called on religious leaders, clergy, and believers around the world to join a Worldwide Prayer for Ukraine on Aug. 24 during the war-torn country’s Independence Day.

“This interfaith spiritual initiative will take place on the day when Ukraine, under conditions of Russian military aggression, marks its 34th Independence Day,” the organizers said.

Their main purpose is to unite believers worldwide in a common prayer for an end to war and suffering, protection of the innocent, preservation of human life, the establishment of a just peace, and the restoration of truth, freedom, and dignity.

“Millions of people in Ukraine continue to suffer from the war caused by the ongoing armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

In this time of severe trials, we need not only political and humanitarian support but also spiritual solidarity — through prayer, compassion, and fraternal participation,” the organizers said.

Anyone, in any country, can join the prayer — whether individually, as a church, or as part of a religious community.

Suggestions include announcing the initiative during services, showing parishioners a short video on the embattled situation in Ukraine, encouraging prayer, and stressing its importance.

Communities may also hold joint prayers for the Ukrainian people and a just peace, distribute brochures with prayer intentions, and encourage continuous prayer support.
