On Remembrance Day for fallen defenders, UWC calls for global solidarity

Today, on Aug. 29, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), together with Ukrainians across the globe, honors the memory of all those who gave their lives to defend Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

This solemn day, the Day of Remembrance for the Ukrainian defenders who’ve perished, was established in 2019 to commemorate one of the darkest chapters of the Russo-Ukrainian war before the full-blown invasion: the 2014 Ilovaisk tragedy in the easternmost Donetsk region. .

It transpired during Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive to liberate and retake towns and population centers that Russian paramilitary groups had occupied that year, but then Russia buttressed its covert invasion with regular Russian troops.

During the withdrawal from Ilovaisk as they were surrounded by Russian soldiers, Ukrainian troops were promised safe passage through two so-called green corridors.

Instead, Russian soldiers opened fire on the columns of Ukrainian troops who were moving through the sunflower fields. Hundreds were killed or captured. Since then, the sunflower has become the symbol of this day as a reminder of both sacrifice and resilience.

For the global Ukrainian community, this day carries a special meaning. It is a time not only to mourn but also to reaffirm unity with the homeland. From Sydney to Toronto, Buenos Aires to Warsaw, Ukrainians abroad stand together in remembrance of the fallen and in solidarity with those who still fight for freedom.

The Ilovaisk tragedy reminds us that Russia cannot be trusted and must be held accountable for its war crimes. We call on the international community to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine in defense of freedom, democracy, dignity, and human rights.

As Ukrainians worldwide light candles, attend memorial services, and wear the sunflower of memory, we remember that sacrifice obliges us to act. Our duty as a global community is to ensure Ukraine’s defenders didn’t give their lives in vain and to continue supporting Ukraine to victory.

Even in the darkest times, the sunflower reminds us that Ukraine endures, and with the strength of its people at home and abroad, Ukraine will prevail.
