Russian hackers reportedly leak classified UK military files online

Russian hackers have gained access to confidential British military documents and posted them on the dark web, report British tabloids Daily Mail and The Mirror

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is investigating what is being described as a major cyberattack.

The hackers targeted a contractor for the British MoD — Dodd Group, a company responsible for technical maintenance and construction of military facilities. Breaching the company’s systems allowed Kremlin-linked actors to steal hundreds of classified files containing detailed information on eight UK military bases.

Among the facilities affected is the RAF Lakenheath airbase in Suffolk, which hosts American F-35 fighter jets. The stolen files reportedly also include names and email addresses of MoD personnel.

The dark web refers to hidden sections of the internet that is accessible only through special encryption tools such as the Tor browser, where stolen or illicit data are often traded anonymously.

Posting such sensitive material there allows hackers to distribute it widely while concealing their identities, a tactic that is increasingly used by Russian cyber operations against Western targets since the start of Moscow’s full-blown invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

We take a robust and proactive approach to cyber threats that could pose risks to national interests. We are actively investigating claims that information relating to the MoD has been published on the dark web,” said an unnamed MoD spokesperson, as cited by The Mirror.

British media have described the leak as “catastrophic,” while cybersecurity experts are currently assessing the scope of the breach and the potential risks to national security.

The MoD has confirmed it has launched an official investigation, but for security reasons, further details have not been disclosed.
