Russian Shame Day: Ukrainians worldwide call for justice

Ukrainian communities around the world came together on May 8-11 to honor the past and call for justice today, marking Victory in Europe Day and Remembrance of the defeat of Nazism in World War II.

A pro-Ukrainian rally was held outside the Russian embassy in Lisbon, where participants condemned “Ruscism” as a new form of fascism. About fifty people, both Ukrainians and Portuguese, took part in the event.

“Today’s Russia is following the path of Nazi Germany,” the activists said.

Ukrainians assembled in Madrid on May 11 to honor those who lost their lives during World War II. The attendees emphasized that Kremlin criminals must not be allowed to rewrite history or justify their crimes against Ukraine through state-sponsored disinformation.

“There was a strong call for the establishment of an international tribunal and the prosecution of Putin and his regime. Unfortunately, we also witnessed another rally of Russian fanatics allowed by Spanish authorities,” said Yuri Chopyk, head of the Ukrainian community of Spain for the Rights, Honor, and Dignity of Ukrainians.

The rally also included urgent calls for a more united and active stance against the Kremlin’s vast propaganda machine, which continues to spread false narratives globally in an attempt to undermine support for Ukraine.

A silent demonstration took place in Melbourne, while in Paris, a performance was held in tribute to Ukrainian children. Veterans gathered for a special meeting in the United Kingdom.

Each act of remembrance served as a call for global awareness and action.

We believe that one day, the world will celebrate victory over another modern dictatorship — this time, over Russia’s brutal war. Just like 80 years ago, it will be a victory for democracy and peace — this time, for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian World Congress has declared May 9 as Russian Shame Day.
