Two significant dates in the following month define Ukraine’s global community when June 1 falls on International Children’s Day and June 4 lands on International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.
These symbolic dates serve as a reminder of the Ukrainian children who endure the hardships of the Russo-Ukrainian war and underscore the urgent need for the world to Stand With Ukrainian Children.
To raise awareness about this critical issue, and about their lost childhood from the strife of war, the Ukrainian World Congress has launched the Stand With Ukrainian Children campaign. It calls on Ukrainians worldwide to take to the streets in their cities and share stories of Ukrainian children whose bravery the world must know.
We have also prepared a collection of such stories to support Ukrainians around the world in spreading this message.
Oleksandra Paskal
Oleksandra Paskal, a young Ukrainian gymnast, has become a powerful symbol of resilience and determination. After losing her left leg in a Russian missile strike on May 16, 2022, she refused to give up on her passion for rhythmic gymnastics.
Despite the immense physical and emotional challenges, she learned to walk again with a bionic prosthetic limb and soon returned to training to compete alongside her peers.
Roman Oleksiv
Roman Oleksiv is a young survivor of a brutal Russian missile strike on Vinnytsia on July 14, 2022. The boy, though gravely injured with burns over nearly half his body and damage to his internal organs, survived.
He underwent 27 surgeries and over 100 days of intensive care in Germany, where he began the long process of rehabilitation, including wearing the compression mask to prevent scarring.
Despite grim medical predictions, Oleksiv defied the odds. He learned to walk again, returned to school, and even resumed his beloved ballroom dancing and accordion lessons. His resilience amazed both doctors and family, turning him into a strong-spirited quiet hero of Ukraine’s war-affected youth.

The main goal of this year’s campaign is to mobilize the global community and political leaders to protect Ukrainian children, to guarantee their future in Ukraine, and to stop Russia’s war crimes against children.
“Ukraine’s victory will mean the return of the children, and the return of the children means preserving Ukraine’s future,” said Volodymyr Kogutyak, Chair of the UWC Advocacy Committee.
