UCC urges Canada to boost support for Ukraine ahead of legislature’s fall session

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has called on Canadian lawmakers and the government to show leadership among allies and take decisive action to ensure Ukraine’s victory as Canada’s parliamentary fall session commences.

The UCC welcomed the recent official visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Ukraine and urged lawmakers to fulfil their commitments to keep supporting Ukraine as it staves off Russian invasion forces.

Key priorities highlighted by the organization include strengthening Ukraine’s defense support. Canada should increase military aid beyond the $2 billion that was allocated this year and significantly expand investment in joint Ukrainian-Canadian arms production, they said.

Economically, the UCC called for broader support for Canadian private sector investments in Ukraine. In the area of justice, the organization stressed the importance of designating Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism and substantially tightening sanctions upon the Kremlin and its covert fleet of oil tankers that circumvent restrictive measures imposed on the country.

The UCC also emphasized backing the creation of an international tribunal to hold Russia accountable for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, and working with allies to seize $300 billion in frozen Russian assets in the West.

It is in Canada’s national interest to ensure a strong, free, democratic Ukraine with which Canada is a close security partner,” the statement said.

The UCC said that expanding Canada’s domestic energy production would reduce Russia’s revenue from energy exports, stimulate the Canadian economy, create new jobs, and enhance global security.

Russia is escalating. Canada and allies need to step up,” the UCC said.

Earlier, a UWC delegation met with Prime Minister Carney during his official visit to Ukraine in August.
