Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with newly re-elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Rome on May 18.
The leaders discussed sanctions against Russia and cooperation within the Coalition of the Willing — an informal group of countries that have voluntarily come together to support Ukraine militarily, economically, and politically — according to the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organizations (AFUO).
“We talked about defense support for Ukraine and collaboration within the coalition of the willing. Our discussion also covered the Istanbul negotiations, increasing pressure on Russia, and identifying sanctions that could compel Russia to stop demanding an unconditional ceasefire,” Zelenskyy wrote about the meeting.
Albanese confirmed that Australia has begun delivering the promised shipment of M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. This decision was the result of sustained advocacy efforts, including by the Ukrainian community in Australia.
Zelenskyy, in turn, expressed gratitude for the Abrams tanks, saying they “help Ukrainian soldiers defend their country.”
“It’s encouraging to have allies from different continents. Together, we can genuinely move closer to peace by maintaining pressure on Russia,” Zelenskyy said.
Both leaders stressed the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Australia and Europe, AFUO said.
“This partnership is vital for protecting democratic values and enhancing global security, which ultimately preserves peace in our region,” the statement said.
The meeting took place during the public ceremony to install the newly elected Pope Leo XIV, who was ceremoniously seated as the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
