Ukrainian community head in Spain thanks Portuguese prime minister for backing Ukraine

MADRID – Yuri Chopyk, head of the Ukrainian community of Spain for the Rights, Honor, and Dignity of Ukrainians, met with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro on the sidelines of the Portuguese People’s Party congress in Madrid.

Chopyk also thanked Montenegro for his support of Ukraine and for welcoming Ukrainian refugees. The party’s extraordinary congress took place in Madrid on July 4-6, with the Portuguese leader attending as an honorary guest.

The event was convened in response to the need for reforms prompted by internal challenges within Spain’s ruling Socialist Party.

“More than 3,000 delegates, along with many invited and distinguished guests, came to show their support for their colleague from the European People’s Party.

“In addition to Montenegro, Manfred Weber, head of the largest faction in the European Parliament was in attendance. After their speeches, I had the opportunity to personally thank them for their support for Ukraine,” Chopyk said.

The head of the Ukrainian community in Spain also noted that in their remarks, Weber and European Parliament Vice President Esteban González Pons addressed the issue of Ukraine and the current threats facing Europe, stressing the importance of unity in the face of the continent’s growing challenges.
