ATHENS – Ukrainian refugees took center stage at the Refugee Week Greece cultural festival, held in honor of World Refugee Day on June 20.
Represented by the Ukrainian Women in Greece organization, the community brought Ukrainian traditions and stories of the heart of Athens, participating in an inclusive culinary exchange at the Myrtillo Cafe.
“We celebrated World Refugee Day in the warmest way possible,” the organization said.
The event paired Greek chef Isidora Antoniou and Ukrainian Halyna Martynenko, who together treated guests to traditional dishes from their respective cultures.
“Halyna served her legendary meat and potato pies, which she says carry love to everyone who tastes them. She also prepared a traditional Ukrainian surprise dessert that was a delightful discovery for many guests,” the organizers said.
Antoniou’s baked goods and Martynenko’s pies created a warm family-style atmosphere — “where the language of taste knows no borders.”
“This was an event about solidarity, flavor, openness, and acceptance. Together, we are stronger!” wrote Ukrainian Women in Greece.
Earlier, the Foundation for the Ukrainian Community of Malta announced its participation in Refugee Week Malta.
Alongside the traditional celebration of Ukrainian culture, the event also emphasized information and advocacy efforts, highlighting the urgent need for support to help return kidnapped Ukrainian children and prisoners.
