Ukrainians bring powerful message on war and democracy to Copenhagen Summit

The Association of Ukrainians in Denmark (AUD) took part in the Copenhagen Democracy Summit on May 13–14, an annual event that fosters dialogue on security and freedom and gathers politicians, diplomats, civil society leaders, activists, and media from around the world.

“Once again, Copenhagen becomes the epicenter of international dialogue on democracy, security, and freedom,” the organization said.

AUD joined the summit for the third consecutive year  — not only as visitors, but as partners and representatives of the Ukrainian community.

“For us, the summit isn’t just a prestigious gathering — it’s a strategic platform to amplify key messages about the war in Ukraine, highlight the importance of global solidarity, and call for decisive action to defend the democratic world,” the organization said.

Political leaders and senior officials from across Europe attended this year’s summit, including EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron.

Addressing the event, UWC Vice President for Northern Europe Roman Mykytenko urged the global democratic community to maintain – and even intensify – its support for Ukraine.

“Only together can we stop the aggressor, liberate Ukrainian land, and defend the values of freedom and democracy,” he said.

AUD strongly emphasized four major themes at the summit.

It called for Russia to be held fully accountable for its aggression and for the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets to be used for Ukraine’s recovery.

The organization also stressed that no part of Ukraine can remain under occupation, since liberation of those territories isn’t just a political objective but a matter of human rights, security, and dignity.

Supporting Ukraine, AUD argued, is key to defending European democracy in the global confrontation with autocracy. And it underscored that the release of prisoners of war, civilian hostages, and abducted children must be unconditional — and remain a top priority for the entire international community.

“A highlight of this year’s summit is the Ukraine House in Denmark initiative, a project of the AUD in collaboration with the Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Denmark and Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry. It features an installation titled “Democracy stands because the Ukrainian infantry stands,” AUD said.

The work features combat boots worn by Ukrainian infantry soldiers who fought at the hottest spots of the frontlines of Russia’s war. It serves as a poignant reminder that democracy endures because someone defends it — that freedom must be protected.

“Our participation is a chance to bring the Ukrainian voice to the table, to remind the world that the war is not over, and to call for concrete action,” said Mykytenko. “Ukraine is fighting not just for its own freedom — but for the future of democracy itself.”
