Ukrainians in Denmark celebrate Ukraine’s completion of EU screening

The Ukrainian Association of Denmark (UAD) has welcomed Ukraine’s historic progress on its path to the European Union. Kyiv has successfully completed a bilateral screening with the European Commission, a key step toward EU membership.

“UAD sincerely thanks everyone who contributed to this achievement, from negotiators and experts to members of parliament and government institutions,” the organization said in a statement.

Completing the screening in record time was made possible through collaborative and dedicated effort, UAD said.

“This achievement holds special significance for every Ukrainian. Our path to the European Union is not just about laws or reforms, it reflects the choice our society made during the 2013–2014 Maidan protests,” the statement said.

Following the screening, Ukraine will move into detailed negotiations with the EU across various sectors, gradually aligning its laws and standards with European requirements. This marks the next stage toward full EU membership.

“For us, Ukrainians in Denmark, this is particularly symbolic. Copenhagen is now putting Ukraine at the center of European decision-making, from defense to integration. Denmark remains one of Ukraine’s most steadfast partners on this path,” UAD said.

A bilateral screening with the European Commission is a thorough review of a candidate country’s legislation, institutions, and practices. European experts assess how well national laws and regulations align with EU standards and requirements.

The goal is to identify which laws already meet European standards and which need reform. Based on the screening results, officials decide when to begin negotiations on specific chapters or what conditions must be met to open them.
