On behalf of the Ukrainian World Congress and the tens of millions of Ukrainians living in communities across the globe, I extend my warmest congratulations to future Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar, the Tisza Party, and the incoming government of Hungary. With near-record turnout of almost 80%, the Hungarian people have made a powerful democratic choice for Europe and for sovereignty.
Their vote is a rebuke of the Russian strategy that has targeted nations across Central and Eastern Europe for decades: sowing ethnic division, deepening energy dependence, and corrupting democratic institutions from within. That strategy failed in Hungary today, as it must fail everywhere it is attempted.
Ukraine and Hungary share a long and nuanced history, alongside deep human ties reflected in sizable ethnic minorities in both countries. The UWC seeks to build a future rooted in shared values, mutual respect, and a common understanding of what Russian domination truly means. The crowds that chanted “Ruszkik haza” or “Russians, go home” across Hungary on election night echo a sentiment that resonates deeply across Ukraine.
A free and sovereign Hungary and a free and sovereign Ukraine are natural partners, bound by shared interests, values, and a common commitment to independence and security. The Ukrainian World Congress looks forward to working alongside future Prime Minister-elect Magyar and the Hungarian people to rebuild trust, advance European solidarity, and ensure that Russia’s war of aggression is defeated through unity and resolve.
We hope that Hungary, as a good neighbour, will help Ukraine become a member of the European democratic community it has voted for.
The Hungarian people have chosen Europe. Ukraine has been fighting for Europe. Together, they will make Hungary, Ukraine, and Europe prosperous, united, and free.
Éljen Magyarország – Long live Hungary!
Slava Ukraini – Glory to Ukraine!
Long live a free, prosperous and united Europe.
