UWC urges boundless backing of Ukraine’s defenders on Oct. 1

Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), on Ukraine’s Defenders Day, October 1, calls on the global community to act with urgency and resolve. As winter looms on the horizon, Ukraine faces the prospect not only of brutal cold but the continued threat of Russian aggression. The time to stand with Ukraine is now.

This national day coincides with the Feast of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a tradition dating back to the 12th century. For centuries, she has been revered as the protector of Ukrainian warriors. Today, her legacy lives on in the courage of those defending Ukraine’s freedom.

We honor every defender of Ukraine, those who have held the line against the Russian invader, and those who continue to shield Europe and the world from further escalation. Their sacrifice is not just for Ukraine, it is for the future of democracy itself.

For over three years, the UWC and donors from more than 70 countries have supported Ukraine’s defenders through the Unite With Ukraine initiative. This campaign delivers life-saving equipment, armored vehicles, drones, tactical medical kits, and other critical gear to those on the front lines. Every contribution helps save lives. Every donation is a step toward victory.

“The UWC and the global Ukrainian community will not waver. We stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine’s defenders and will continue until Ukraine wins and Russia is defeated. We call on every individual who values freedom and democracy to join us. Visit the UWC website and support our Unite With Ukraine initiative today,” said Paul Grod, President of the UWC.

Ukraine’s fight is not just its own. It is a battle for the soul of Europe and the principles that underpin free societies worldwide. The Armed Forces of Ukraine are the shield protecting peace, prosperity, and stability across the Euro-Atlantic region.

As winter draws near, the stakes grow higher. Russia has weaponized cold and darkness before, targeting energy infrastructure, displacing families, and attempting to break the spirit of a nation. This winter must be different. Ukraine must be equipped not only to endure, but to advance.

We call on world leaders to act decisively:

• Provide Ukraine with long-range weapons and advanced air defense systems.

• Fully confiscate frozen Russian assets. The aggressor must pay for the destruction it has caused.

• Redirect those funds toward Ukraine’s victory and reconstruction.

The time for caution has passed. The time for bold, united action is now. Let this winter be remembered not for suffering, but for solidarity, strength, and the turning of the tide.
