Book on European mass famines presented in Canada

A new book on mass famines has been released in Canada, featuring a chapter specifically dedicated to the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine, according to the Holodomor Research and Education Consortium (HREC) at the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta.

The Famines and the Making of Heritage is the first book to integrate innovative research on the role of European famines in the 19th and 20th centuries in shaping heritage, museum studies, commemorative culture, education, and monument creation.

The history of the Holodomor in Ukraine is discussed in the Holodomor Monuments on the Battlefield: Monuments and Memorials of the Great Famine (1932-33) in Post-Maidan Ukraine) chapter.

This chapter aims to explore how the re-enactment of the Holodomor past through monuments and the ways in which they are framed have changed over time, including under the influence of the current situation in Ukraine,” the book states.
