Canada provides Ukraine with $7.1 million to restore energy sector

Canada is providing Ukraine with the equivalent of $7.1 million to help quickly repair and protect its energy infrastructure ahead of the approaching winter season, Ukraine’s Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk reported.

“This assistance is part of a broader 70 million Canadian dollar support package,” Hrynchuk said.

The decision was announced during a joint briefing on the sidelines of the G7 Energy Ministers’ Summit by Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson.

“Our colleagues reaffirmed the readiness of the Canadian government and people to continue supporting Ukraine and to respond swiftly to our needs amid Russia’s ongoing aggression,” Hrynchuk said.

In addition to the emergency aid, Ukraine and Canada will deepen their long-term energy partnership.

The partnership entails areas of cooperation in renewable energy, nuclear safety, rebuilding infrastructure, energy security, investment, and other aspects.

Hrynchuk discussed this with Minister Hodgson and Canada’s Special Representative for Ukraine’s Reconstruction, Chrystia Freeland.

After the meeting, Hrynchuk and Hodgson signed a joint declaration of intent to bolster cooperation between the two countries.

“This marks the beginning of a new stage in our partnership. Our priorities include restoring Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, developing nuclear and renewable energy, expanding cooperation in the oil and gas sector, and promoting energy efficiency and innovation,” Hrynchuk said.

Ukraine and Canada also plan to launch a series of joint initiatives, attract private Canadian investment into Ukraine’s energy sector, and boost business-to-business partnerships to implement shared projects, exchange expertise, and foster innovation.

“I am grateful to our Canadian partners for their commitment to results-oriented cooperation and to the government and people of Canada for supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s energy terrorism,” Hrynchuk said.
