Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine Natalka Cmoc called on Ukrainian communities in Canada and around the world to continue advocating for Ukraine, strengthening its international standing, and supporting Ukrainian organizations, especially during the Christmas holiday season.
“What is becoming clearer is that this is not just a local war between Russia and Ukraine, but one with global consequences. Anyone who believes in democracy, in the rules-based international order, in sovereignty, and in respect for borders that must not be crossed or taken by force should speak up for those principles,” Cmoc said.
The diplomat added that supporting Ukraine means supporting democracy and human rights worldwide.
“The fight Ukraine has taken on for all of us is about democracy, it is about sovereignty. So it is a good cause to put your voice behind,” she said.
According to her, advocacy at all levels, from diplomats to ordinary citizens, makes a real impact.
“Everyday people are the ones who will post on their social media, forward messages, or talk about it — whether they’re in a restaurant, shopping, or at school with their kids. If there is an issue that you find really important, it’s crucial to talk about it and share important information,” the ambassador said.
Cmoc also said that Ukrainian officials highly value global community support.
“Ukrainian leaders often describe Canada as one of their closest friends, not only because of government-to-government cooperation, but because of communities, individual people, foundations, and advocacy group. They are present, they’re very supportive of Ukraine.”
As Christmas approaches, Cmoc urged people to think of Ukrainians who may spend the holidays without their loved ones, either because family members are at the front or because families are separated between Ukraine and Canada.
“Invite them into your homes and wish them all the best,” she said.
If people are looking for a meaningful Christmas gift, Cmoc suggested making a donation to a Ukrainian organization, “to our Ukrainian family.”
“It makes a big difference. The money does reach the front lines, and it is making a real impact,” Cmoc said. “Glory to Ukraine. Merry Christmas.”
