Canadian-born Ukrainian Tanya Boychuk is called up to Ukraine’s national soccer team

Renowned Ukrainian Canadian soccer player Tanya Laryssa Boychuk has been called up to the Ukrainian national team training camp, despite previously having the opportunity to play for Canada’s national squad.

“We are immensely proud to see a dynamic Ukrainian Canadian athlete join the ranks of Ukraine’s national sports team,” said UWC President Paul Grod. “May this be the first of many people from our global Ukrainian communities who step forward to represent Ukraine — in sports, the arts, diplomacy, public service, and beyond — as we work together to defend, rebuild and strengthen our homeland. Congratulations, Tanya!”

Boychuk decided to join Ukraine’s team after Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

“For years, my family and I talked about this. I had a great experience with Canada and wanted to play for their team. But when the full-scale war started in 2022, I spoke with my family about all the work they do for our Ukrainian community in Canada. And I realized I wasn’t doing much. This is my way to give back to Ukraine and our Ukrainian community,” Boychuk told Suspilne Sport.

The athlete was born and raised in Edmonton, Canada, in a family actively involved in the Ukrainian community. Her parents Orysia and Vlodko and brother Marko participate in events supporting Ukraine, organizing rallies and cultural activities.

Boychuk grew up as a member of the Ukrainian Youth Association (CYM) where she attended weekly meetings, summer camps, and leadership seminars.

“When I was little and went to school, every Saturday we had Ukrainian lessons, including cultural classes. On Tuesdays, I attended CYM — Ukrainian Youth Association activities and then on Wednesdays I took Ukrainian dance classes. I learned the Ukrainian language, history and geography,” Boychuk said.

She began playing soccer at the age of three, while also excelling in other sports — notably diving, where she achieved significant success. In 2015, she won two bronze medals at the Junior Pan American Games as part of Team Canada.

After starting university in the U.S., Tanya focused fully on soccer. She joined the Memphis Tigers and became the team captain. Over four seasons, she played 74 matches, scored 21 goals, and won the conference championship twice.

Boychuk has competed in leagues in the US, Iceland, and Sweden, and was among the first players in Canada’s new professional league. She represented Canada’s U18 and U20 national teams and was nominated for the country’s Best Young Player award in 2020.

When Tanya Boychuk’s name was officially announced as part of Ukraine’s national team training camp, she dedicated the moment to her family.

To my family, this chapter’s for you. Слава Україні,” Tanya wrote on her Instagram post.
