Chrystia Freeland brings experience, integrity, and commitment to Ukraine’s renewal

Statement by Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress 

I sincerely congratulate The Hon. Chrystia Freeland, PC, MP on her appointment by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s new Economic Development Adviser. President Zelenskyy emphasized that she is highly skilled in attracting investment and implementing economic transformations, reflecting her long record of public service and economic leadership.

Chrystia Freeland’s background as Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Finance, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of International Trade has placed her among the most capable political figures on the world stage. Her experience negotiating major trade agreements and shaping national economic policy demonstrates her ability to help strengthen Ukraine’s internal resilience at a pivotal moment in the country’s struggle for recovery and security.

Chrystia Freeland is the right person at the right time for Ukraine. She has consistently supported Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing aggression, and her expertise in economic restructuring aligns with Ukraine’s urgent need to rebuild, attract investment, and prepare for long‑term growth.

Beyond her professional achievements, Freeland brings a personal and deeply rooted commitment to Ukraine and the global Ukrainian community. With Ukrainian heritage through her mother, she grew up actively engaged in the Ukrainian Canadian community. She has fostered Ukrainian language and culture within her own family, sending her children to Ukrainian Saturday school and encouraging their involvement in Plast, the Ukrainian youth scouting organization. She embodies the values and identity of a dedicated Ukrainian Canadian.

Chrystia Freeland has long been a close partner of the Ukrainian World Congress and a great friend to me.  She consistently supports our mission to unite Ukrainians globally and advocate for Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic future.

We are truly grateful to her for taking on this important new mission and look forward to supporting her work.  We wish her every success as she contributes her experience, skill, and unwavering dedication to Ukraine at this critical time.
