The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has officially confirmed the arrival of Western F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
“We have often heard the word “impossible” in response, but we have made possible what was our ambition, our defense need, and now it is actually a reality, a reality in our skies. F-16s are in Ukraine. We made it happen,” said Zelenskyy.
He also emphasized that he is proud of the adeptness of Ukrainian pilots who have mastered these planes and have already started using them for the defense and security of the state.
At the same time, The New York Times, citing American officials, reports that nevertheless Ukraine will be able to muster no more than ten F-16 fighters on the battlefield this year.
These American fighter jets can significantly strengthen the defense of Ukraine. They can help air defense destroy incoming Russian drones and missiles, also fight against Russian bombers launching guided aerial bombs near the frontlines and to strike enemy ground targets with long-range missiles.
However, for now, given the small number of these planes and trained pilots, the introduction of these few aircraft will not significantly affect the situation on the battlefield.
The agreement to supply Kyiv with F-16 first became public knowledge in the spring of 2023. By the end of the year, Ukraine should receive 20 more fighters. The rest of the 79 promised aircraft will arrive in batches during 2025.
