The Senate of the Italian Republic recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. The resolution was supported by 130 votes “for”, 4 abstained, and no official voted “against”. This was announced by Oles Horodetskyy, the president of the Christian Association of Ukrainians and the leader of the Ukrainian community in Rome.
“I congratulate you Ukrainians on this historic victory! Glory to Ukraine!” Horodetskyy said.
In the document, the Italian senators indicated that the USSR, led by Stalin, created an artificial famine that caused millions of deaths.
“The memory of the Holodomor and Soviet crimes against the Ukrainian people acquires even greater significance today in light of the Russian invasion and a new attempt to erase Ukrainian national identity,” the resolution reads.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba welcomed the decision of the Italian Senate and thanked Ukrainian partners for their support.
“This important step restores historical justice, honors millions of victims, and warns future generations against the crime of genocide,” Kuleba concluded.
