Kowal: Only a united EU can effectively deter Russian aggression

Europe must remain united in any negotiations with Russia, as only a coordinated stance can effectively protect Ukraine’s interests and deter Kremlin aggression, said UWC Executive Committee member Zenon Kowal in an interview with Tsybulko Talk.

Kowal, who also advises the European Congress of Ukrainians and the Association of Ukrainians in Belgium, noted that Russia can exploit the ambitions of individual European leaders.

“That’s why it’s extremely important to avoid divisions. For example, if Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni or French President Emmanuel Macron negotiates with Putin, everything must be coordinated and discussed with other key EU partners,” he said.

Kowal added that coordinated action within the EU ensures that no unilateral decision undermines the collective strategy and helps maintain solidarity on sanctions, defense support, and diplomatic efforts.

“But I believe that with a sensible approach, Europe must remain united in negotiations with Putin,” he said.
