Mahi For Ukraine, the Ukrainian community in New Zealand, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of New Zealander Shane Le Kearns, who lost his life while volunteering in the Russo-Ukrainian war, already entering its fourth year.
“We are deeply saddened to hear that Shan Le Kearns has fallen while defending Ukraine. On behalf of the Ukrainian community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his whānau and friends during this time of grief,” the statement said.
The organization highlighted the profound courage Le Kearns demonstrated by standing with Ukraine against Russian aggression, stating that his courage “will never be forgotten.”
Mahi added that “we honor his memory with gratitude and respect — as we do all New Zealanders, and others who have risked everything to support Ukraine’s right to freedom and sovereignty,” they said. “His sacrifice will always be remembered.”
The news of the 26-year-old New Zealander’s death in Ukraine came to light on May 30 and was confirmed by his family to 1News.
His mother, Elis Kearns, shared that Shane received basic training upon arriving in Ukraine to assist the injured and that he “loved what he was doing.”
She described him as incredibly caring, especially towards those who were struggling.
“He’s pretty open minded, and he’s wise in his age I reckon. Because for him to survive two whole years in the Ukraine, and still take newbies under his wing and help them out … he makes sure everyone is cared for.”
