More than one million people in Ukraine’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region were left without heating and water supply following a massive Russian airborne strike, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration Oleksii Kuleba said on Jan. 8.

Emergency repair work is currently under way.

“As of now, we have already managed to partially restore centralized systems in several communities. Repair crews are working at an intensified pace,” Kuleba said.

Social and critical infrastructure facilities are operating on backup power.

“All trains in de-energized Dnipro and the surrounding region continue to run using diesel traction. Railway stations are also powered by generators, and resilience centers are operating,” the deputy prime minister added.

Repair crews worked throughout the night in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia as well. Power supply has been restored there, while heating and water supply to homes is being maintained.

“In the Zaporizhzhia region, power supply to strategic infrastructure has been restored. Trains are running as usual,” Kuleba said.

Earlier, Dnipropetrovsk Regional Governor Vladyslav Haivanenko reported that infrastructure in the Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro and Pavlohrad districts was damaged as a result of a massive Russian drone attack.

According to him, 97 drones were launched across Ukraine overnight, 27 of which hit targets at 13 sites.

It is important that Ukraine’s partners around the world respond to Russia’s abuse of civilians, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote.

There is absolutely no military rationale in such strikes on the energy sector and infrastructure that leave people without electricity and heating in wintertime,” Zelenskyy said.

This is a war waged by Russia directly against the Ukrainian people, against life in Ukraine, an attempt to break the country, he said.

That is why support for our resilience and all forms of assistance to our state must function at full capacity. Diplomatic discussions cannot be a pretext for slowing down the supply of air defense systems and equipment that helps protect lives,” Zelenskyy said.
