The Verkhovna Rada yesterday passed a bill in the first reading to introduce exams for acquiring citizenship of Ukraine.
The draft proposes amendments to the laws “On Citizenship of Ukraine” and “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language”. In particular, the draft law stipulates that a foreigner who wishes to become a citizen of Ukraine has to bind himself or herself to pass exams on the basics of the Constitution of Ukraine, the history of Ukraine and sufficient command of the Ukrainian language, as well as furnish documentary proof of having the tests passed within two years of the application for citizenship. Failure to fulfill these requirements would entail the loss of Ukrainian citizenship.
