Pope Leo XIV expresses support for Ukraine amid Russia attacks

Chicago native Pope Leo XIV has expressed his support for Ukraine and offered sincere condolences to the families of those killed as a result of Russian aggression.

I express my closeness to martyred Ukraine — to the children, the young people, the elderly, and especially to families who mourn their loved ones. I share your sorrow for the prisoners and victims of this senseless war,” the Pontiff said in a statement.

Published on June 28, his remarks were delivered after yet another wave of massive Russian attacks on Ukraine. The Pope also spoke directly to Ukrainians during a meeting with members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, who were on an official pilgrimage to St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.

The faith of your people is now being put to a difficult test,” Pope Leo said. “Believing does not mean having all the answers, but trusting that God is with us and gives us His grace, that He will speak the final word, and that life will triumph over death.

The Ukrainian World Congress expressed gratitude for the Pope’s words, saying they sincerely hope His Holiness will become a voice for peace in Ukraine, calling for an end to bloodshed and the restoration of a just peace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the Pope “for his ongoing prayers and compassion for Ukraine and our people.”

“Together, we must stop this reckless Russian aggression and protect innocent lives. A just peace is needed,” Zelenskyy said.

The president added that Ukraine would be “deeply grateful” for any help the Vatican can provide in securing the return of adults and children being held by Russia.
