Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin has assumed direct control over the rewriting of history in textbooks, underscoring his increasingly authoritarian rule and the Kremlin’s drive to impose an imperialist worldview on future generations, according to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation.
In a recent meeting with textbook editors, Putin demanded revisions to “correct old textbooks.”
He claimed that materials written before the start of the full-scale war against Ukraine had contents that he described as “blatant Russophobia,” with “distorted historical facts,” and “anything but the truth.”
According to the Center, Putin’s push to rewrite history books is part of a broader campaign to militarize children and eliminate any trace of dissent within the education system.
“The fact that the Russian dictator is personally involved in shaping how history is taught shows just how much value he places on indoctrinating children,” the Center said.
They emphasized that education in Russia is now primarily a tool for promoting war as normal, cultivating absolute loyalty to the Kremlin’s aggressive policies, and preparing future generations to fight in Russia’s wars.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has reported that Russian authorities have banned the teaching of the Ukrainian language in schools in occupied territories.
