Russia expands strategic grip in Africa with stealth arms shipments and military buildup

In a bold show of force and strategic maneuvering, Russia is deepening its military footprint across West Africa, delivering advanced weaponry and expanding the operational scope in its newly formed “Africa Corps,” according to an in-depth investigation by the Associated Press.

Skirting sanctions imposed by Western nations, Moscow is using cargo ships to send tanks, armored vehicles, artillery and other high-value equipment to West Africa,” the text reads.

Among others, two sanctioned ships — “Baltic Leader” and “Patria” — offloaded cargo at the port of Conakry, Guinea, in late May. The equipment was later transported overland to Mali.

Associated Press tracked a convoy of Russian-flagged cargo ships that spent nearly a month sailing from the Baltic Sea. According to European military officials monitoring the route, the ships were carrying howitzers, electronic warfare systems, and other military equipment.

The deliveries could strengthen Russia’s fledgling Africa Corps as Moscow competes with the United States, Europe and China for greater influence across the continent,” the text reads.

Unlike groups formally subordinate to local armies, the Africa Corps is believed to have its own autonomous air support.

We intend to expand our cooperation with African countries in all spheres, with an emphasis on economic cooperation and investments. This cooperation includes sensitive areas linked to defense and security,” said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

The Kremlin formed the Africa Corps after the dissolution of the Kremlin-backed Wagner private military contractor in 2023. The new structure is reportedly overseen by Unit 29155 of Russia’s military intelligence – GRU, which has been repeatedly accused of sabotage operations and assassinations in Europe.
