Russia pushes the “Korean scenario” for Ukraine

Russia’s idea of a “peaceful settlement” is to divide Ukraine according to the so-called “Korean scenario,” said Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, in an interview aired on the evening of January 7.

Dmytro Kozak, the Deputy Head of Russia’s Administration of the President, “goes to meetings with politicians of the past in Europe and conveys through them the message that they are ready to make many concessions to fix the status quo as it is today and force us to come up to some kind of truce,” the media quoted Danilov as saying.

“We are now being offered a Korean option. The so-called conditional ‘38th parallel,’” said the NSDC Secretary, referring to the dividing line between North and South Korea. “So here you have one type of Ukrainians, and there you have another type of Ukrainians. The Russians will now invent anything. I know for sure that one of the options they can offer us is the ‘38th parallel.’”

However, according to Danilov, South Koreans with whom he spoke recently consider the decision made in 1953, ostensibly for achieving peace and preserving the country, to be a mistake.
