Russians hit UN base in Zaporizhzhia

The Russians targeted a hotel in Zaporizhzhia, where the UN base for evacuating civilians from Azovstal was located. This happened during another occupiers’ attack on Zaporizhzhia on August 10. One person died, and 19 were injured, including 4 children, due to the shelling, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine reported.

The United Nations condemned the Russian attack. Denise Brown, the humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine in the UN, said that she was “appalled” by the shelling of the hotel.

“I have stayed in this hotel every single time I visited Zaporizhzhia. My team uses it as their base for their frequent travels to the city. It was the UN base for the operation to evacuate civilians from the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, in May last year,” Brown explained.

The UN stated that the number of indiscriminate attacks hitting civilian infrastructure, killing and injuring civilians, has reached unimaginable levels.

“These attacks violate international humanitarian law. In the name of humanity, I call on the Russian Federation to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law and immediately stop indiscriminate attacks on Ukraine,” Brown concluded.

In addition to the UN base, the hotel also had a children’s camp during the day. The shelling began an hour after the facility closed. This is the second attack on Zaporizhzhia in two days. On August 9, three people were killed, and nine others were injured due to shelling by the Russians.
