Sky News removes pro-Russian article on Ukraine following AFUO appeal

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) reported that Sky News removed an article containing misleading information about Ukraine after the organization raised concerns.

This week the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations raised serious concerns about a Sky News article that contained misleading narratives about Ukraine and we’re pleased to share a constructive result,” the AFUO said.

Key issues with the article included, among others, the headline “Ukraine strike kills 24 in Russia,” which was inaccurate, as the reported strikes took place in Russian-occupied Ukrainian territory, not in Russia.

The article was imbalanced.

It cited statements from a Kremlin-appointed local official but did not include the response of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which refuted the claims and confirmed that Ukrainian strikes comply with international humanitarian law.

The report also lacked context regarding the recent surge of Russian disinformation about Ukrainian operations, including widely debunked claims last week of alleged Ukrainian drone strikes on one of Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin’s residences.

After the AFUO engaged directly with Sky News, the article was removed and a correction was published: skynews.com.au/corrections,” the organization said.

The community thanked the media outlet for its swift and responsible response.

We will continue to call out Russian disinformation and lies to support accurate reporting and counter propaganda,” the AFUO added.
