Trump sets new deadline for Russia to reach peace deal with Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly is losing patience with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin has set a new deadline of 10 to 12 days for the Kremlin to reach a peace agreement in its war against Ukraine, saying the countdown begins immediately.

I’m going to make a new deadline of about 10 or 12 days,” Trump said during a July 28 news conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland.

This marks a significant shift from the 50-day window Trump initially offered Moscow earlier this month. That original deadline was set on July 14, when Trump sharply criticized the Kremlin and warned of consequences if it failed to make progress toward peace.

He had threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on Russia if it failed to come to the negotiating table.

The 47th U.S. president said he is “disappointed in President Putin” and now believes the Russian leader is unlikely to accept his proposals. In response, Trump said he is prepared to impose additional sanctions, and said secondary tariffs would be levied against countries that continue purchasing Russia’s energy exports.

The U.S. has also signalled a readiness to supply weapons to allies for Ukraine’s defense.

On July 27, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Trump is “running out of patience” and losing interest in waiting for Moscow to make moves toward ending the war.

The Kremlin has “taken note” of Trump’s revised deadline, said Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. However, Moscow maintained it will continue its so-called “special military operation” to defend its interests.
