Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says that Russia’s intensified attacks on Ukraine underscore the urgent need for reliable security guarantees from allies. He said that partner support is critical to protecting Ukraine and deterring further aggression.
“Russia brutally attacked Ukraine…, killing innocent civilians in residential areas and damaging the Cabinet of Ministers building,” Carney said, expressing condolences to the families of the victims and those affected.
A just and lasting peace for Ukraine will require strong security guarantees, the Canadian prime minister said.
“Canada stands with Ukraine and Putin’s unrelenting aggression will never weaken our resolve,” he said.
Overnight on Sept. 7, Russia set a new record since the full-scale invasion by deploying more than 800 drones and various projectiles during airborne strikes across Ukraine. Four civilians were killed, and over 200 sought medical assistance. The Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv was hit, making it the first government building struck since the all-out invasion.
Earlier, on Sept. 4 in Paris, the “Coalition of the Willing,” a group of Ukraine’s partner countries, met. In total, 35 countries agreed to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, and 26 of them are prepared to send military contingents, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
