Ukraine tests homegrown microwave weapons to knock down drones

Ukraine has begun testing several domestically developed microwave weapon systems designed to counter drones, as part of the Brave1 defense innovation platform, according to Brave1 CEO Andrii Hrytseniuk.

Speaking on the Do Zbroi! (To Arms) program aired by the outlet Militarnyi, Hrytseniuk said the systems use high-power electromagnetic radiation in the microwave spectrum to disable electronic equipment, primarily unmanned aerial vehicles.

He noted that microwave weapons present a particular challenge, as Ukraine has not traditionally specialized in this field, but said testing is already underway on multiple solutions. Hrytseniuk did not provide details on specific projects, testing stages, or preliminary results.

High-power microwave emitters are seen as a promising tool for counter-drone warfare. Such systems can potentially neutralize multiple drones at once, offer a low cost per engagement, and provide a virtually unlimited “ammunition” supply. They work by directing electromagnetic waves that disrupt or destroy drone electronics.

Experts say rapid global advances in these technologies, driven by increasing power output and shrinking size, are making them more mobile and easier to integrate across different platforms.

The Ukrainian World Congress continues to cover key frontline developments daily in its Victory Chronicles updates.
