Ukraine’s military says it has liberated six of 18 occupied villages and key positions in the northeastern Sumy region, and in two areas have reached the border with Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on Aug. 12.
“We had 18 locations in Sumy — occupied villages or strategic positions. Six have been liberated, so we are moving forward. That’s good news. We reached the border with the Russian Federation in two locations. I think the situation there is generally positive,” Zelenskyy said.
The president also said that Ukrainian troops advanced another 900 meters, or roughly a half a mile, in the region, getting closer to several border areas.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s defense forces are maintaining positions in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and have pushed forward about 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) into enemy positions in the easternmost Luhansk region.
Earlier, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, reported successes on the Sumy front amid Russian attempts to advance deeper into the region.
“It’s difficult, but we are holding back the enemy. On the Sumy front, we are conducting active operations and making progress in liberating Ukrainian territory,” Syrskyi said.
