Ukrainian World Congress Calls on International Community to Monitor Ukraine’s Re-Elections
UWC to deploy International Election Observer Mission
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is calling for the international community to monitor Ukraine’s Parliamentary re-elections scheduled for 15 December 2013.
On 5 September 2013, the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine adopted the Law “On re-elections of the people’s deputies of Ukraine in single mandate electoral districts No. 94, No. 132, No. 194, No. 197, No. 223” and set 15 December 2013 as the date for the re-elections in the five outstanding single mandate constituencies in which the Central Election Commission failed to establish results following the 28 October 2012 Parliamentary elections.
The re-elections will take place in the following five electoral districts: No. 94 – Kyiv Oblast, City of Obukhiv; No. 132 – Mykolayiv Oblast, center, City of Pervomajsk; No. 194 – Cherkassy Oblast, center, Cherkassy, Prydnipro region; No. 197 – Cherkassy Oblast, center, City of Kaniv; and No. 223 – City of Kyiv, center, Shevchenko region.
The UWC will be deploying an international observer mission to monitor these re‑elections and is appealing to its constituent organizations around the world to encourage their members to volunteer as observers in UWC’s mission.
The UWC supports Ukraine’s commitment to OSCE standards for free and fair elections that accurately reflect the will of the electorate.
“The UWC organized the largest non-government funded International Election Observation Mission to monitor Ukraine’s 2012 Parliamentary Elections. The Mission fielded over 250 observers from 20 countries and assessed both the pre-election environment and the Parliamentary elections,” said UWC President Eugene Czolij. “Based on the assessment of the long-term observation mission, which began its activities in July 2012, the UWC deployed a large short-term election observation mission to every region of Ukraine and several of Ukraine’s diplomatic missions around the world.”
