On 26 April 1986, the nuclear facility in Chornobyl, Ukraine, was the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster, the effects of which continue 32 years later to be a source of study.
The catastrophe was the result of the ruthless exploitation of Ukraine and its people by an imperialistic Soviet regime that throughout its history manifested a callous disregard for human life. The lives of 28 reactor staff and emergency responders were sacrificed, hundreds of thousands of individuals were displaced, and the effects on the long-term health and well-being of millions exposed to the radioactive fallout continue to be monitored.
The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) highly commends the efforts of Ukrainian authorities to address the many issues resulting from the aftermath of this nuclear catastrophe.
The UWC acknowledges the international government agencies and non-governmental organizations that, over the years, have provided technical and financial assistance, as well as humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian people.
On the 32nd anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, the UWC pays tribute to the heroic emergency responders and all of the victims, and calls upon the international community to join the global Ukrainian community in remembrance.
“The Ukrainian World Congress reminds the world that the horrific event of 26 April 1986 in Chornobyl was the result of negligence on the part of the predecessor of today’s Russian Federation, and continues to stress the need for vigilance and resolve in responding to the continuing blatant disregard of the Russian Federation for the value of human life as demonstrated by its aggressor actions in Eastern Ukraine, and the gross violations of the human rights of Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars on the territories it occupies,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
