Union of Ukrainians in Romania commemorates 35th anniversary in parliament

The Romanian Parliament hosted a formal celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania (UUR), bringing together over 500 participants, including community members, representatives of Romanian and Ukrainian authorities, and friends of the Ukrainian community.

The event, held in honor of Ukrainian Language Day in Romania, also served as an opportunity to reflect on the organization’s decades of work.

Mykola-Myroslav Petretskyi, Vice President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) for Eastern Europe, head of the UUR, and member of the Romanian Parliament, highlighted the contributions of everyone who helped shape the Ukrainian community in the country.

“We have become a strong national organization, capable of developing and implementing national policies across many areas, promoting Romania’s best practices globally, and uniting Ukrainians from across the country into one family where every member’s voice matters,” Petretskyi said.

He also underscored the UUR’s broad activities, from participating in the drafting of legislation to facilitating nearly three dozen cross-border agreements between Ukrainian and Romanian authorities, aimed at strengthening cooperation and supporting local communities.

UWC President Paul Grod congratulated the community on the milestone and emphasized the importance of the UUR’s work for the Ukrainian world in Europe.

“It is a great honor for me to address you today on the 35th anniversary of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania. Thirty-five years represent a history of tireless work, civic dedication, and love for Ukraine. The Union of Ukrainians of Romania has become an integral part of the country’s democratic life, a model for Ukrainian communities across Europe, and a valued member of the UWC,” Grod said.

He also thanked the Romanian government and parliament for their long-standing support of Ukraine and expressed special gratitude for their solidarity during the war.

“Today, as Ukraine fights for freedom and justice, the example of the Union of Ukrainians of Romania inspires our entire Ukrainian world. You have shown that strength lies in unity, collective effort, and faith in the future,” he added.

The celebration highlighted not only historical achievements but also the UUR’s ongoing role in strengthening Ukrainian identity, developing education and culture, and supporting the community amid today’s challenges.
