Unity Day: UWC calls on Ukrainians worldwide to stand together

Today on Jan. 22, Ukrainians around the world mark Ukraine’s Unity Day, a symbol of the historical commitment to stand together despite borders, empires, and war. On this day, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) honors the 1919 Act of Unification as a defining moment that affirmed the idea of an indivisible Ukrainian nation and shared responsibility for its future.

Unity always transcended geography. 

It means unity of action, values, and voice. Today, as Ukraine confronts Russia’s full-scale aggression, the unity between Ukraine and millions of Ukrainians abroad is decisive for preserving statehood, freedom, and democracy.

Russia is waging war not only for territory but for Ukraine’s right to exist as a distinct, sovereign nation. In response, Ukrainians at home and across the global Ukrainian community demonstrate the opposite: a shared will to resist, mutual support, and the ability to take coordinated action worldwide — from humanitarian assistance and advocacy to political pressure on democratic governments.

On Unity Day, the UWC calls on Ukrainian communities, organizations, chapters, and networks around the world to join in signing The Global Ukrainians’ Declaration of Unity — a joint document that affirms our resolve for a united Ukraine, support for its independence, and coordinated action by Ukrainians worldwide. In wartime, such a declaration is not a symbolic gesture but a practical instrument of unity.

“Today, unity means not only remembering a historic act, but taking collective action every day. By signing the Declaration of Unity, Ukrainian communities affirm that wherever we live, we are part of one Ukrainian people and share responsibility for Ukraine’s future,” said UWC President Paul Grod.

The UWC urges all Ukrainian organizations, communities, and opinion leaders to bolster their coordination, speak with one voice, and act together with the ultimate goal of attaining Ukraine’s victory and a just peace.
