Unity is Europe’s strength: Ukrainian leader in France rejects NATO exit talk

Ukrainian communities and activists in France are helping reinforce a clear message amid geopolitical uncertainty: Europe’s unity with Ukraine must come first, regardless of shifting dynamics in the United States.

That was the main takeaway from remarks by Volodymyr Kogutyak, UWC Vice President for Western Europe and Vice President of the Association of Ukrainians in France (AUF).

Speaking to Apostrophe TV during an interview, Kogutyak addressed media reports suggesting that France might consider leaving NATO.

“Right now, for France, the priority is not so much NATO membership as it is unity with Europe. We are very pleased that our communities and activists on the ground have been able to show France that the most important thing is the unification of Ukraine and Europe, because we share a common enemy. What happens in America can change very easily,” Kogutyak said.

He added that France’s internal situation does not allow the country to abandon its alliances, and any statements about a possible NATO exit reflect specific political currents rather than the general position of the population.

“Today, the focus is less on NATO or America and more on Europe,” he said.

Kogutyak said that Russia is trying to exploit domestic debates in France to divide Europe. However, French citizens and politicians recognize the real threat posed by the war in Ukraine and do not support abandoning strategic partners.

“The public does not support these ideas for many reasons, including because they see what is happening in Ukraine,” he added.

The Ukrainian community leader called on Europe to demonstrate strength and support for Ukraine.

“Russia only attacks those who are weak. If Europe shows that it is unafraid, it will help prevent further aggression.”
