US considers delivering seized Iranian weapons to Ukraine – CNN

The United States of America may announce the provision of seized Iranian weapons to Ukraine, CNN reported, citing sources. The US Central Command plans to announce the intention as early as this week.

“The US will transfer thousands of seized Iranian weapons and rounds of ammunition to Ukraine, in a move that could help to alleviate some of the critical shortages facing the Ukrainian military as it awaits more money and equipment from the US and its allies, US officials said,” the journalists said.

The US and France seized the weapons as part of a global crackdown on Iranian smuggling to Yemen. The Houthis, allies of Tehran, have been waging an eighth straight year of war against the Saudi-backed government that was ousted from the capital in 2014.

The United Nations requires that seized weapons be destroyed or stored. Therefore, it is currently unclear how the United States will legally formalize the transfer of weapons. For the past several months, the Biden administration has been considering ways to deliver such aid to Ukraine legally.
