UWC and MUKU call on Orbán to support Ukraine’s EU integration

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and the Magyarországi Ukrán Kulturális Egyesületet (Society of Ukrainian Culture in Hungary; MUKU) addressed the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán with an appeal to support the process of Ukraine’s integration into the European Union during the European Council Summit in Brussels on December 14-15, 2023.

On behalf of both organizations, Paul Grod, UWC President, and Jaroszlava Hartyányi, MUKU President and UWC Second Vice President, assured Prime Minister Orbán that Ukraine’s full-fledged membership in the EU meets the interests of the Hungarian people. They also stressed that Ukraine has demonstrated significant progress in implementing legislative and other reforms to meet the EU standards, including the recent amendments to the Ukrainian national minorities law.

Today, while Ukraine fights a war for its very right to exist as an independent, sovereign, and free nation, it is simultaneously implementing European legal standards as required by the European Commission. Considering these circumstances, UWC and MUKU Presidents appealed to Hungary’s Prime Minister to be principled in his position and support the European Council’s decision to commence negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

“The issue of Ukraine’s membership in the EU is first and foremost a matter of European security and stability. With its battle-hardened army and people committed to European values, Ukraine will only expand the European bloc’s capabilities and strengthen its resilience against external threats. Hungary will also benefit from this move: politically, economically and, in terms of national security,” reads the official letter.
