UWC applauds Argentina’s rejection of BRICS membership

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the decision of Argentina’s President Javier Gerardo Milei to halt the country’s planned entry into the BRICS bloc of emerging economies.

Argentina was scheduled to join the bloc on January 1st, 2024. However, in late December President Milei reversed the decision of the previous government, stating that this was not “opportune” for Argentina to become a full BRICS member.

“Since his election, President Milei has demonstrated a strong commitment to the values of democracy, freedom and the rule of law – values which are not shared with Russia and China who dominate the BRICS bloc,” stated the UWC President Paul Grod. “UWC applauds President Milei’s decision to reject the BRICS and embrace the values of human rights and justice.”

In a recent appeal to President Milei, the UWC’s President Grod and Vice President for South and Central America Jorge Danylyszyn called on the Argentinian leader to increase the country’s political and diplomatic support for Ukraine in 2024. They emphasized that, by waging its full-scale war against Ukraine, Russia aims to restore the era of empires and “spheres of influence,” where larger and more powerful nations dictate the destinies of smaller and weaker ones. They highlighted that the international community’s timid response to Russian aggression fuels the expansionist ambitions of authoritarian regimes worldwide, leading to increased global instability.

“For decades, Russia has been sowing discord through its propaganda and creating global turmoil by sponsoring terrorist groups and dictatorships around the world, including in South America. Putin’s tactics are clear – destabilize democracies and dismantle the rules-based international order and rebuild the Russian empire. Today, Russia is leading a new alignment of authoritarian nations, namely China, Russia, Iran and North Korea – fondly referred to as the CRINKs,” concluded President Grod.
