UWC calls for global response as Russian occupiers destroy Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam. Act now!

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls for a broad global response to Russian terrorism after the Russian occupiers destroyed the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) dam across the Dnipro River, causing a major humanitarian and environmental man-made disaster across southern Ukraine.

We call on the global democratic leaders to condemn Russia’s brutal and inhumane actions, immediately provide maximal military and economic support for Ukraine to throw the Russian invaders out of its lands, and reject any “peace plans” suggesting to “freeze” the war or start negotiations with the aggressor state until full de-occupation of Ukrainian lands. We also call on Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine worldwide to take to the streets and demand that their governments act resolutely and provide Ukraine with all support required to defeat the deadly Putin regime.

The destruction of the Kakhovka NPP and its dam that was carried out by the Russian terrorists early in the morning on June 6, 2023, is another war crime, according to the Geneva Convention and the biggest man-made disaster in Europe since the 1986 Chornobyl catastrophe. It will also have countless far-reaching and long-lasting negative consequences for all regions in the south of Ukraine.

  • First of all, it further endangers the safety situation at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which relies on water from the Kakhovka reservoir to provide power for the turbine condensers of the plant and cool its reactors.
  • Secondly, the dam’s destruction will drain out the reservoir leaving approximately one mln Ukrainians in the country’s southern regions, including Crimea, without permanent access to fresh water. This will also devastate the economy, particularly the Ukrainian metallurgy sector and agribusiness that highly depend on water. Such a blow to Ukraine’s agriculture will further deepen the global food crisis and influence billions of families across the globe.
  • Thirdly, the floodwaters will ruin at least 80 towns and villages in the Kherson Oblast and the entire region’s ecosystem. As soon as the flood wave reaches, massive pollution of the Black Sea will follow.

Russia’s heinous terrorist act, an act of unimaginable and irresponsible barbarism at the Kakhovka NPP, is one more clear demonstration of the fact that Russia and criminal Putin himself don’t care about the future of Ukrainian lands, which the Russian propaganda claims to be “historically Russian.” By destroying the Kakhovka dam, the Russians have condemned Russian-occupied southern Ukraine to turn into a desert, literally and figuratively. Even Crimea, “the holy cornerstone of the Russian spirit,” as Putin claims, is doomed, as the dam’s destruction will inevitably lead to a disruption in the supply of fresh water to the peninsula.

The only purpose of Russia’s war against Ukraine is the genocide of the Ukrainian people and the complete devastation of Ukrainian lands. Russia once again proved itself a major global threat with its ruthless actions. The international democratic community must stand united and join all possible efforts to support Ukraine and stop this pure evil – not only for the sake of Ukraine itself but for the whole world’s sake.
