On July 1, 2019, the Summer Institute 2019, organized by the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) International Educational Coordinating Council (IECC), will begin its work in Lviv, Ukraine.
The Summer Institute tradition is an integral part of the Institute for the Professional Development of Teachers (IPDT) and was created within the IECC in 1992. The aim of the IPDT is to disseminate among Ukrainian educators contemporary teaching methods and principles of democratic school leadership; to assist in the development of skills necessary to work during periods of transition, change and information warfare; and, to develop life-long learning skills. Starting in 2016, these principles became an integral part of the New Ukrainian School in all schools of Ukraine.
In a letter addressed to the participants of the Summer Institute 2018, Minister of Education and Sciences of Ukraine Liliia Hrynevych stated “…it is due to the cooperation with the Institute which began during the initial days of educational change in a newly independent Ukraine, that an agents of change network was developed in the educational community of Ukraine. This laid the groundwork for today’s progress.”
The director of IPDT-IECC is the former Chair of the IECC (1998-2008), Nadia Luciw, MA and co-director is Kateryna Horokhovska, former Director of Education for the City of Lviv (2011-2013) and Head of the Dzherelo Rehabilitation Center Board of Directors (2013-2019).
During the Summer Institute 2019, which will be conducted July 1-12, 2019, participants will include teams of educators representing their schools from Lviv and Lviv Oblast, as well as, Mukachevo and Zakarpattia Oblast. Each team will include the school principal, the vice-principal, the school psychologist, and teachers from the following disciplines: grade 1, science, math, Ukrainian language, foreign language. The focus will be on meeting the needs of teachers who work with grades 5-9 students.
In May, 2019, in preparation for the Summer Institute 2019, Kateryna Horokhovska and Dr. Oksana A. Wynnyckyj-Yusypovych, former Head of IECC (2008-2018), who is currently Advisor to the Minister of Education and Sciences of Ukraine and Advisor to the Mayor of Lviv, met with educators in the City of Lviv. Additionally, Kateryna Horokhovska and Bohdan Kolos, Head of Plast National Executive in Canada, met with representatives of the City of Mukachevo.
“I am very pleased that there are such highly qualified and dedicated educators in the diaspora who are prepared to devote a part of their summer holidays to share their personal knowledge and expertise with our colleagues in Ukraine who are currently working to implement ground-breaking educational change. We are eagerly anticipating a busy couple of weeks in Ukraine,” said Nadia Luciw, director of the IPDT-IECC.
